Tokyo Motor Show Closes "Autonomous Driving" Draws Attention

The 44th Tokyo Motor Show (hosted by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association) concluded its 11-day run on November 8th.

Under the show's theme, "Your heart will race," 160 companies from 11 countries participated, displaying 417 vehicles, including 75 world premieres and 68 Japan premieres. This year's show focused attention on autonomous driving technology, targeting practical implementation by 2020. The organizer's initiative, "Smart Mobility City" (SMC), featured prominent displays and presentations specifically on this technology, receiving extensive media coverage.

On the 6th, near the end of the event, SMC held an international symposium titled "How Will Autonomous Driving Change Cars, Daily Life, and Society?" Attendees included representatives from the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA), officials from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), the National Police Agency, and transportation policy experts from Europe and the US. They delivered lectures, presentations, and participated in panel discussions on autonomous driving from various perspectives.

Opening the event, JAMA Chairman Fumihiko Ike stated, "I believe autonomous driving technology can help us achieve a freer lifestyle and society." JAMA announced its "Autonomous Driving Vision," aiming to "realize the world's safest, most efficient, and freest mobility society. "

The keynote address outlined challenges and technological approaches addressing current issues in the automotive society, each company's initiatives in autonomous driving technology, and related systems and infrastructure. Recognizing that 2020 is the year of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, it indicated that efforts toward the practical application of next-generation transportation systems and autonomous driving systems will accelerate. JAMA declared it will vigorously pursue these efforts, including subsequent developments.

Total attendance for the entire motor show period was 812,500 people, approximately 90 percent of the previous event (2013). The next 45th edition is scheduled for autumn 2017 at Tokyo Big Sight.
