"The Phantom Thief Nuggets" Appears at Jingu Stadium!

Starting June 8th, McDonald's Japan is offering two limited-time sauces for Chicken McNuggets: "Creamy Cheese Sauce" and "Fruit Curry Sauce." To promote these sauces, they're running a campaign featuring the elusive character "Mysterious Thief Nuggets," who appears unpredictably across the country.

Posting predictions about the thief's identity, sightings at stores, or crime warnings found in various locations on social media enters you into a lottery to win "Golden Nuggets" or coupons.

The Phantom Thief has previously appeared at several McDonald's locations nationwide. He repeatedly dips customers' limited-edition sauce into his nuggets, strikes the "Nuggets!" pose with his thumbs and index fingers raised, then departs. On the 16th, he appeared at the Tottori Prefectural Office, where a tasting event was being held, and snatched Governor Shinji Hirai's sauce. He even petitioned to rename the prefecture "Chicken Nugget Prefecture," playing on the prefecture name's characters "鳥" (bird/chicken) and "取" (take/get), causing a stir.

 

On June 18th, the Phantom Thief appeared at Jingu Stadium in Shinjuku, Tokyo, during a professional baseball game between the Yakult Swallows and the Seibu Lions.

 

The Phantom Thief performed the ceremonial first pitch with Donald McDonald as the batter. He also presented both teams with free coupons for Chicken McNuggets for 72 days (7 = Na, Gett, 2 = Two). During breaks in the game, he posed with fans doing the "Nuggets!" gesture. In the seventh inning, known as Lucky Seven, he joined cheerleaders and the Swallows mascot, Tsubakuro, performing the "Tokyo Ondo" – a song famously used to cheer on the Swallows – on the field, energizing the stadium. Perhaps spurred by the cheers, the Swallows added a run with a home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. That proved to be the winning run, securing a 5-4 victory.
