The 2013 Epica Awards ceremony, an advertising prize selected by journalists from the world's leading advertising industry magazines, was held in January in Gurgaon, a new city near Delhi, India. Founded in 1987 with its secretariat in France, the award is unique in being judged by advertising journalists rather than creators. This year, judges were invited from 41 magazines across 34 countries. While previously limited to works from Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, the scope expanded globally starting in 2012.
The "The Ultimate Pencil" Marslumograph by Staedtler Japan, created by Dentsu Inc. art director and graphic designer Hideto Yagi, won the Gold Award in the Illustration category. This work is a meticulously detailed illustration created solely with pencils.
Prior to the awards ceremony, Yagi delivered a commemorative lecture titled "Creating Positive Change" at a conference. He emphasized, "Rather than a passive attitude toward orientation, it's crucial to adopt a stance of proposing and shaping ideas that the world needs." He identified seven key elements: "Emotion," "Dream," "Movement," "Beauty," "Fun," "Excitement," and "Passion." He stated, "By incorporating these into advertising, we aim to positively influence the viewer's emotions."
