The 37th Japan Academy Prize Awards ceremony was held on March 7 at the Grand Prince New Takanawa in Minato Ward, Tokyo. Director Yuya Ishii's "The Great Passage" (produced by TV Tokyo, Shochiku, Asmik Ace Entertainment, Dentsu Inc., etc.) won top honors in six categories: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Sound Recording, and Best Editing. Based on Shion Miura's novel of the same name, the film depicts the struggles of a diverse editorial team tackling a new dictionary project and the growth of the protagonist, a "good-for-nothing employee" played by Ryuhei Matsuda, who transfers to the editorial department and becomes engrossed in dictionary-making.
Director Issei, who won Best Director, congratulated Ryuhei Matsuda, who won Best Actor for the film, saying with a shy expression, "This time, I really wanted Matsuda-san to win." Matsuda expressed his joy, saying, "I'm very happy. I received the Newcomer Award for Director Nagisa Oshima's 'Gohatto,' and now I've won Best Actor. I hope to be influenced by many people and find what I can do within that."
