Exploring Industrial Recovery Challenges: Doyukai Holds Great East Japan Earthquake Memorial Symposium
The "National Economic Council of Japan Great East Japan Earthquake Memorial Symposium" and "Memorial Ceremony" (hosted by the Disaster Recovery Subcommittee of the Regional Administrative and Fiscal Reform Promotion Council, National Economic Council of Japan) were held on March 11 at The Westin Sendai in Sendai City. The event was supported by the "IPPO IPPO NIPPON Project," launched by economic councils nationwide to aid recovery and reconstruction in the disaster-affected areas. Approximately 280 executives attended.
At the symposium, Masayoshi Nuki, Representative Director of the Fukuoka Keizai Doyukai (Chairman of Kyushu Electric Power), delivered the opening address. He stated, "The challenges we must overcome will likely vary significantly more by region than ever before. It is crucial that the National Keizai Doyukai, together with the disaster-affected areas, thinks, deliberates, and acts to ensure recovery measures tailored to local needs are implemented under regional leadership," demonstrating his resolve to prevent the memory of the disaster from fading. Following this, Yasushi Hasegawa, Representative Director of the Japan Association of Corporate Executives (President of Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited), moderated a discussion. Representatives from the Sendai, Fukushima, and Iwate chapters of the Japan Association of Corporate Executives debated the theme "Challenges for Industrial Recovery in the Disaster-Affected Areas."

At the memorial ceremony, Mr. Hasegawa, who also serves as co-chair of the IPPO IPPO NIPPON Project, stated, "We must never forget the lessons learned from this great disaster. It is our duty to join hands, encourage one another, and make this region more prosperous and one that the departed can be proud of." All attendees observed a moment of silence at the exact time the earthquake struck. Following a performance on a cello made from driftwood from the disaster area, Mr. Atsushi Niimi (Representative Director of the Chubu Keizai Doyukai and Chairman of JTEKT) called for further support for the project. After the ceremony, three breakout sessions were held.
