"JANKEN GLICO 2020 REMOTE" Rock-Paper-Scissors Tournament Featuring Star-Studded Cast and General Participants
Ezaki Glico held the online event "JANKEN GLICO 2020 REMOTE" on August 8 and live-streamed it on its YouTube channel.
"JANKEN GLICO" is a game where the winner of a rock-paper-scissors match advances based on their winning gesture (Rock = 3 steps with Glico, Scissors = 6 steps with Chiyokoreito, Paper = 6 steps with Pineapple Puru), with the first to reach the goal declared the winner.

Since February, the company has aired TV commercials featuring 12 Horipro talent: the "Janken Glico Opening" edition and the "Janken Glico 2020 Remote" edition ( https://dentsu-ho.com/articles/7155 ). Subsequently, it planned to hold a real-world national tournament as a sport everyone could enjoy, blending the luck of rock-paper-scissors with the exercise of climbing stairs. However, the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Therefore, driven by the desire to "bring even a little smile to people's faces, especially now as everyone strives daily toward a new normal," the company launched this online event. It was arranged to be enjoyed remotely while moving your body, carrying the message "Let's start with a smile. smile Glico."

Ambassadors and actors Haruka Ayase, Satoshi Tsumabuki, Tatsuya Fujiwara, Kyoko Fukada, and Nagisa Sekimizu participated in the online event, enjoying "Rock-Paper-Scissors Glico" with 615 selected participants. The event also challenged the Guinness World Record for "Most People Playing Rock-Paper-Scissors Simultaneously Online," achieving the record with 364 participants.

Following the athletes' oath, the preliminary round began. MCs and participants played rock-paper-scissors, with winners performing an on-the-spot stair-climbing action. The first 100 people to reach the 25-step goal advanced to the final round.
While the male team of Tsumabuki and Fujiwara racked up early wins, the female team including Ayase desperately caught up midway, turning it into a fierce battle. In the late stages, while Tsumabuki, Fujiwara, and Sekimizu were on the verge of winning but stuck in a stalemate, the 100th finalist was decided in the 11th round from among the general participants. Surprisingly, all ambassadors were eliminated, but through a special measure by the organizers, Ayase, Tsumabuki, and Sekimizu advanced to the finals via a special slot.

The final round saw the three ambassadors and 106 general participants who passed the preliminaries play rock-paper-scissors against Fujiwara and Fukada, who had become their opponents. After a fierce battle that went into overtime, general participant "0042 Powarin" emerged as the tournament's first-ever champion.
Between matches, the ambassadors answered questions from participants and the MC, and reflected on the commercial shoot. Exchanges revealing the ambassadors' private sides—such as "favorite dishes," "secrets to staying positive," "how they address each other," and "recent episodes that made them smile the most"—had participants and viewers equally fascinated.

After the event, the ambassadors and general participants toasted while enjoying Glico snacks.
The five ambassadors shared their thoughts with smiles, looking back happily on the event: "Even though it was through a screen, we had a wonderful time with everyone. Let's meet again!", "Seeing so many of your smiles made it a truly happy time!", and "I was thrilled to achieve the Guinness World Record together with so many people!".
A replay of the event is available on the company's official YouTube channel.
