26 Organizations Apply for Tokyo Games Additional Events

The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games held its 7th Board of Directors meeting in Minato Ward, Tokyo, on June 12, followed by a press conference.

Chairman Yoshiro Mori stated that regarding venue changes, the IOC Executive Board meeting held in Lausanne, Switzerland, on the 7th and 8th approved 8 of the 10 sports under review. He also revealed that 26 sports federations, including baseball/softball, karate, and squash, had submitted bids for the additional events by the June 8 deadline. He stated that in deciding the events, they would consider various perspectives, keeping in mind IOC President Thomas Bach's philosophy of "prioritizing the feelings of young people."

The venue review aimed at cost reduction and the host city's proposal for additional events align with the spirit of the IOC's medium-to-long-term reform plan, "Olympic Agenda 2020," launched last year.

Secretary General Toshiro Muto explained the resolutions and reports from the Executive Board meeting. He reported that the approved revisions to eight sports venues are expected to save approximately ¥70 billion, and combined with the savings approved at the February IOC Executive Board meeting, the total reduction is estimated at around ¥170 billion, earning high praise from the IOC. The two sports still requiring venue adjustments are cycling and soccer (additional venues). Regarding potential new sports additions, he stated that the review meeting on June 22 will announce which organizations will proceed to the next step—hearings in early August—and that the final proposal for new sports will be selected by the September 30 deadline for submission to the IOC.
