The music event "Lucerne Festival ARK Nova Matsushima 2013" (organized by the Matsushima Executive Committee <Matsushima Town, Matsushima Town Board of Education, etc.> and the ARK Nova Executive Committee) was held from September 27 to October 13, primarily at Saigyo Modoshi no Matsu Park in Matsushima Town, Miyagi Prefecture.
Initiated by the world-renowned Swiss music festival "Lucerne Festival," it aimed to support recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake through music. The venue featured the "Ark Nova" (Latin for "new ark"), a movable concert hall designed by architect Arata Isozaki and British sculptor Anish Kapoor, measuring 18 meters high, 30 meters wide, and 36 meters long. The hall, seating approximately 500 people, hosted not only classical concerts but also various performances including kabuki by Fujitaro Sakata and others, and kyogen by Ippei Moyama and others. On October 13th, Ryuichi Sakamoto conducted the "Tohoku Youth Orchestra," formed by children from across Tohoku, performing pieces such as "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence."
The Ark Nova Matsushima event received extensive coverage not only in domestic but also international media.
While the next location and timing for the music festival remain undecided, the executive committee stated, "We hope Ark Nova will become a symbol of cultural revival in the Tohoku region and wish to continue it."
