Official TV Portal "TVer" Launches!
On October 26, Japan's five major commercial broadcasters (Nippon TV Network, TV Asahi, TBS Television, TV Tokyo, and Fuji Television) launched the official commercial TV portal "TVer" (tver.jp).
TVer is a catch-up service that streams TV programs for free with ads. It is available on PCs, smartphones, and tablets. Users can search for programs they want to watch, select shows featuring their favorite talents, and check related topics. Initially, it will stream about 50 programs, including dramas and variety shows currently airing on each network, for a limited period of roughly one week after the broadcast ends until the next episode airs.
At a joint press conference held at Nippon TV in Minato Ward, Tokyo, on the service launch day, TBS Television Executive Director Toshiaki Kawai, representing the five companies, stated: "TVer is the official service of commercial broadcasters. All content here, including commercials, is safe, secure, free, and high-quality. Please enjoy TVer starting today." Following this, young announcers from the five networks took the stage. While introducing their personal favorite programs, they promoted the new service with messages like, "If you happen to miss it, watch it on TVer," and "When you want to watch it again (after seeing it live), watch it on TVer."
