The annual winter illumination display began at Caretta Shiodome and Caretta Plaza in Minato Ward, Tokyo, on November 17. (Until February 14, 2017)
Now in its 11th year, the illumination is renowned for its fantastical blue light displays, attracting approximately 500,000 visitors during the previous event. This year's theme, "Canyon d'Azur ~ Forest of Blue Spirits ~," features an enhanced illumination using approximately 270,000 LED lights.
Ringing the "Spirit Bell" at the forest's center causes light walls of varying heights to resonate, illuminating the entire Spirit Forest. An illumination show featuring original music and a tapestry of seven-colored lights will be held every 20 minutes.
This year, Masako Ikeda, renowned for voicing the heroine Maetel in "Galaxy Express 999" and dubbing Audrey Hepburn, serves as the narrator for the illumination show. All music is comprehensively produced by Shigeru Yawata, who has composed for numerous stage plays and musicals.
On the opening day, singer May J. was the guest at the lighting ceremony. As the illuminations lit up following May J.'s countdown, a huge cheer erupted from the watching crowd, celebrating the arrival of the Christmas season.
Dressed in a gown inspired by the "Blue Spirit," May J. performed songs from her new album, including a "Santa Claus Medley," adding a special touch to the ceremony.
She then rang a bell with eight children, followed by a special show.
Throughout Caretta Shiodome, messages left by the spirits, themed to the event, are scattered. Special events include a lottery for luxurious prizes and an Instagram campaign where gift certificates are given away.
