New Sport Added to "Casual Sports" Let's work up a good sweat with "Afrel Afro"!
The "Yuru Sports Festival 2017" (sponsored by Kao's hair care brand "Merit" and hosted by the World Yuru Sports Association) was held on May 14 at the TOYO TIRES TOYOSU DOME in Koto Ward, Tokyo.
"Yuru Sports" refers to competitions that anyone can enjoy, regardless of age, gender, athletic ability, or disability. This Japan-originated sport was established in April 2015. The association has now developed over 45 unique Yuru Sports. Its goal is to eliminate sports underdogs worldwide.

This year's second annual sports festival featured 18 different "Yuru Sports" events, including "Caterpillar Rugby," "Black Hole Table Tennis," and "Zombie Soccer." Approximately 120 participants enjoyed the day, with children and adults alike working up a sweat together.
Guest star Shinichi Shinohara, a judoka and TV personality, challenged the original "fun-sport" "Afurel Afro" developed by Kao's "Merit". "Afrel Afro" is a 3-on-3 game where all players wear Afro-style wigs. These wigs are made from discarded fiber materials and feature a hollowed-out top. Players aim to throw small, soft balls into this hollow space. The team that scores the most balls within the 90-second time limit wins.
After practicing before the event, Shinohara remarked, "The receiver and thrower need to communicate and position themselves well," showing signs of struggling. Although his team suffered a crushing 66-18 defeat in the "official match," he smiled and said, "Well, it's fun. I hope it gets adopted as a sport for school athletic meets and catches on." They also experienced a game using the electric wheelchair "WHILL." Team members took turns tossing balls at Shinohara-san's afro while he was seated in the wheelchair, scoring the day's highest total of 29 balls. He celebrated with high-fives from the participants.
Reflecting on the event, Shinohara said, "It's fun for parents and children alike, and everyone can work up a sweat regardless of age. I hope it becomes popular in regional areas too. I want to deepen bonds by doing it with my kids." He concluded by promoting, "After exercising, please take a family bath and wash away the sweat with Merit."
