The first edition of the championships was held in 1973, making this Budapest event the 17th.
During the event, competitions were held in swimming, synchronized swimming, diving, high diving, water polo, and open water swimming. Over 2,500 athletes from more than 180 countries and regions participated. Japan dispatched approximately 120 representatives, including athletes and officials, to this biennial "world championship" of swimming.
■ Synchronized Swimming
The Japanese team won bronze medals in the Team Technical Routine and Free Combination events, but their performance was somewhat subdued compared to the four bronze medals won at the previous championships (2015, Kazan, Russia).

■ Swimming
The Japanese swimming team won a total of seven medals, but none were gold.
For the women, Yui Ohashi won a silver medal in the 200m individual medley.
For the men, Kosuke Ogino won silver in the 200m individual medley, and Junya Koga won silver in the 50m backstroke.
In the 200m breaststroke, Yuzuru Koseki won silver, while world record holder and first-time participant Ippei Watanabe took bronze. This marked the first time multiple Japanese athletes won medals simultaneously in individual swimming events at a World Championships.
Seto Daiya won bronze medals in both the 200-meter butterfly and the 400-meter individual medley.

■ Official Partners
Companies like Yakult Holdings, an Official Partner of FINA since 2005, Nikon, a partner since 2007, and ANA, which signed a partnership agreement in 2015, primarily displayed their company names at venues, on athletes' bibs, and swimming caps, while also offering unique services. Some partners also set up shops and booths to promote themselves.
