Survey on University Students' Perceptions of "Yutori Education" ~ Released by the Tokyo Advertising Association

The Tokyo Advertising Association announced the results of its "Survey on University Students' Perceptions of Yutori Education" on December 6. The survey was planned, conducted, and analyzed by the "University Student Awareness Survey Project FUTURE2013," a group of volunteer marketing students from five universities in the Tokyo metropolitan area: Komazawa, Sophia, Senshu, Toyo, and Nihon. The sample size was 800. It explored how current university students, who themselves experienced the "relaxed education" system, evaluate it.

Approximately half of the university students evaluated the "relaxed education system" as "good." The top reasons cited were: "I was able to gain experiences outside of studying and do things I wanted to do," "I had more holidays and personal time," and "The amount of studying was less, making it easier to study." The top reasons cited for it being "not good" were: "My general knowledge and academic ability declined due to reduced study time," and "Being called 'yutori' makes me feel looked down upon by other generations."

Furthermore, by cross-referencing "awareness of being part of the 'yutori' generation" and "resistance to being labeled 'yutori'," this generation was categorized into four types: * The "Genuine Yutori Group" (36%), who seem satisfied with their current situation. * The "Anxious Group" (33%), who feel inferior about being part of the 'yutori' generation. "The Rigorous Group" (20%) who refuse to yield to negative stereotypes about the Yutori generation, and "The Unfazed Group" (11%) who simply don't care about the Yutori label.
