Farewell Gathering for Mr. Amano and Mr. Shimamori

A farewell gathering for Mr. Yūkichi Amano and Ms. Michiko Shimamori was held in Tokyo on December 7.

Organized by former members of the magazine 'Advertising Critique' in response to the passing of its first editor-in-chief, Yukichi Amano (who died October 20), and its second editor-in-chief, Michiko Shimamori (who died April 23), the gathering was attended by approximately 250 people who knew and admired the deceased.

Advertising Critique was launched in 1979. In the opening essay of the preparatory issue published that April, Amano wrote: "Advertising is an exceptionally avant-garde form of expression within popular culture. By maintaining a vital connection to the 'now,' advertising has opened people's imagination toward daily life and trained their eyes to live with flexibility." Until its hiatus in 2009, the magazine critiqued advertising expression from diverse angles, contributing to the elevation of the creative profession.

The venue displayed issues of the magazine from the preparatory edition to its final issue, No. 336, along with other publications they worked on, reflecting on the legacy of these two individuals who remained steadfast companions to advertising creators.

Greetings were also delivered by individuals who had been close to the two during their lifetimes, including commercial director Toru Kawasaki, and a poem contributed by poet Shuntaro Tanikawa was read aloud.
