The annual Caretta Shiodome illuminations commenced on November 16 in Minato Ward, Tokyo. This marks the 12th year of the event. Last year, it attracted approximately 460,000 visitors during its run, firmly establishing itself as a winter tradition.
This year, commemorating the release of the MovieNEX edition of the hit 2017 Disney film "Beauty and the Beast," the illumination "Caretta Illumination 2017 ~The Story of True Love~" will be displayed, inspired by the film's world.
On opening day, a lighting ceremony was held featuring musical actor Ikusaburo Yamazaki. Yamazaki voices the Beast in the Japanese dubbed version of the film.
As the countdown ended and the illuminations lit up, a huge cheer erupted from the visitors.
Centered on blue, symbolic of Caretta's illuminations, light towers are colored in "Belle Yellow," the hue of the heroine Belle's dress, depicting the "Belle and the Beast dance scene" from the film. Candles decorate a space evoking a dance hall, and the main tree features the "magic rose" from the movie, showcasing meticulous attention to detail.
Ms. Yamazaki expressed her excitement, saying, "It feels like I've become a character from the movie. I want to walk around inside." The lighting ceremony also featured a special program using the famous song "Beauty and the Beast" and "Evermore," sung by Céline Dion in the end credits, captivating the audience with the fusion of light and sound.
Yamazaki performed a mini-live set with songs selected from her new album. "Singing amidst such magnificent illuminations feels absolutely wonderful," she remarked.
Later on stage, seven girls dressed in Belle-style gowns appeared. They invited Ms. Yamazaki, who had changed into a prince-style costume from the film, to join them. Ms. Yamazaki passionately sang the song "Secret Dream" from the movie, celebrating the illumination's start with the attendees.
Throughout the illumination period at Caretta Shiodome, running until February 14, 2018, the venue will feature photo spots inspired by the film, panel displays themed around the story, and an exhibition of costumes worn by the Japanese cast during promotions, aiming to further enhance the excitement.
