On March 15, the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced that, with the cooperation of railway companies, trains in the Tokyo metropolitan area will operate until late at night during the Olympic period.
The Organizing Committee and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government have been consulting and coordinating with railway companies in the Tokyo metropolitan area to address train crowding during the Games and the demand for late-night return trips from competition venues.
The extended service period will run from the Olympic Opening Ceremony (July 24, 2020) until the Closing Ceremony (August 9). JR Yamanote Line, Tokyo Metro, and Toei Subway lines are considering operating until around 2:00 AM. Other lines are considering operating until around 1:00 AM to 2:00 AM.
Organizing Committee Secretary General Toshiro Muto commented, "Thanks to the efforts of 19 railway operators, trains will run significantly later than usual every day during the 17-day Olympic period. This will allow many spectators to enjoy events until the very end, even those with late finish times, which we greatly appreciate."
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government stated that this information should be used as a reference when purchasing spectator tickets, which go on sale this spring.
Detailed operating schedules will be announced closer to the Games.
