"READY STEADY TOKYO Surfing" Held at Chiba's Tsurigasaki Beach

Ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, the surfing competition for the READY STEADY TOKYO test event (hosted by the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee), aimed at enhancing competition and event management capabilities, was held from July 18 to 21 at Chigasaki Surfing Beach in Chiba Prefecture, the official venue. Rounds 1 and 2 for both men and women on the first day were open to the press.

The 2020 Games will mark the first time surfing is featured in the Olympics.
The day featured shortboard events (men's and women's), with 20 Japanese athletes competing in each category.
Competition results are determined by 5 to 7 judges scoring riders' technique as they ride waves. Scoring evaluates the difficulty and creativity of maneuvers, as well as speed and dynamism. Athletes perform around 10 rides within the time limit, with the combined score of their two highest-scoring rides counting.

Top athletes participating included Reo Inaba, a World Championship medalist; Hiroto Arai, based in Australia; Hiroto Ohara, known for dynamic maneuvers that consistently place him high in global competitions; and on the women's side, Nao Omura, a multiple World Championship medalist; Reika Noro, active on the world stage; and junior pro surfer Shino Matsuda.
