On July 14, radiko, which provides IP simulcast radio services, announced that its paid service " radiko.jp Premium (Area-Free Listening)"—allowing users to listen to programs from across Japan regardless of region via " radiko.jp "—reached 100,000 members in approximately three months, from its April 1 launch to July 11.
The service currently offers access to 62 stations. Regarding reaching 100,000 members, the company views this as evidence that user demand to "listen to radio beyond the constraints of broadcast areas" was greater than anticipated.
Additionally, the company revealed that during the June 20th live broadcast of the "2014 FIFA World Cup: Japan vs. Greece" match (6:40 AM to 9:10 AM) by 59 commercial radio stations, the total instantaneous access count for radiko.jp peaked at 162,000 during the 8:00 AM hour, setting a new record. The match coincided with the morning commute and school hours, with 86% of all users listening via smartphone. The surge in access is attributed not only to the program's high profile but also to significant social media buzz spreading before, during, and after the broadcast. Tweets included many comments like "Listening to the Japan match on radiko," "Cheering for Japan on radiko," and "So glad radiko exists."
