2015-2016 marked the 60th Shikinen Sengai (the major 20-year cycle of shrine reconstruction) for Kasuga Taisha Shrine (Nara Prefecture). As part of the pre-PR campaign for the 2016 Main Hall Relocation, the 66th Sapporo Snow Festival (February 5-11, 2015) featured a large snow sculpture of the World Heritage site "Kasuga Taisha Shrine's Central Gate."
At the Snow HTB Plaza on Odori West 8th Street, the venue, the Ground Self-Defense Force's 18th Infantry Regiment completed a nearly full-scale (height 11.5m, front width 17.2m, depth 9.3m) large snow sculpture of the Central Gate.
The Snow Festival opening ceremony was held in the plaza in front of this large snow sculpture on February 5. Representing the organizers, Sapporo Mayor Fumio Ueda delivered a greeting. Additionally, Grand Priest Kōkyō of Kasuga Taisha participated in the official events and spoke about the significance of participating in the Snow Festival in front of the completed snow sculpture. At night, projection mapping using the snow sculpture was also performed, drawing large crowds of visitors.
