JX Nippon Oil & Energy and the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games signed a partnership agreement on March 18, designating the company as a "Tokyo 2020 Gold Partner. "
Gold Partner is the highest domestic tier within the Games' sponsorship program, granting rights such as the use of the Games name and mark. This is the sixth company to be designated a Gold Partner.
The contract period is six years from 2015 to 2020, and the category is "Oil, Gas, and Electricity Supply. "
At a press conference held the same day at Hotel New Otani in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, Chairman Yasushi Kimura referenced the company's history of supplying gas for the cauldron and kerosene for the torch at the 1964 Tokyo Games, stating: stated, "We will support the Games' operations by providing gasoline, light oil, and other fuels . We aim to position 2020 as a showcase for hydrogen supply and wish to cooperate with Tokyo's Action Plan (to create a low-carbon, highly efficient, self-reliant, and decentralized energy society), including expanding hydrogen stations." He expressed his aspiration to energize the Games movement using Japan's largest ENEOS service station network as a base.
Organizing Committee Chairman Yoshiro Mori stated, "The company will tackle the extremely important task of supplying hydrogen energy. We expect the Tokyo Games to serve as a catalyst for realizing a 'hydrogen energy society' that captures the world's attention. We will work hard together with everyone toward the Games." He expressed anticipation for utilizing hydrogen energy at the new National Stadium and the Athletes' Village.
Olympic veterans including Yuko Oga of the Japan Women's National Basketball Team and players like Raimu Tokashiki of the JX-ENEOS Sunflowers took the stage, adding color to the press conference.
