MBS, ABS, and OBS, the three Osaka-based radio stations, held a joint press briefing on July 27th following the issuance of provisional licenses for FM complementary relay stations by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. They plan to launch "FM complementary broadcasting" by spring 2016, which will transmit the same broadcasts as AM via FM waves as a countermeasure against urban reception difficulties and disasters.

MBS President Keiichi Mimura (left), ABS President Satoshi Wakizaka (center), and OBS President Masaaki Tokunaga display the transmission frequencies for the new FM complementary relay stations.
During the 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, radio continued to deliver locally rooted information to residents in the affected area, playing a vital role as a lifeline.
The issuance of these provisional licenses represents a major step forward, not only in resolving AM radio reception difficulties in urban areas but also in ensuring reliable information transmission during major disasters.
The three companies will refer to the 90-95 MHz frequency band as "Wide FM" and work to promote the adoption of compatible receivers.
