Ahead of the electricity retail liberalization starting April 1, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's Electricity Trading Surveillance Commission is conducting a "Power Liberalization Caravan" at shopping malls nationwide to explain the changes more clearly. On March 7, they held a PR event at Futakotamagawa Rise Galleria.
Deputy Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Junji Suzuki, opened the event stating, "An era is coming where consumers can choose their own electricity provider at home. This is a major reform, the first in 60 years. We want to roll out the Electricity Liberalization Caravan nationwide to provide hints on what liberalization means, what its benefits are, and how to make a choice."
Guest Kaori Manabe commented, "I believe life is a series of choices, and making decisions suited to the times and circumstances is key. Electricity retail liberalization marks a major turning point in our era, so I hope people can assess the present situation and make informed choices."
After learning about various benefits and system details through her talk with Vice Minister Suzuki and the "Electricity Retail Liberalization Quiz," Manabe concluded, "With over 200 options currently available and potentially good deals to be had, I want to scrutinize them carefully and make the best choice for myself."
Following the talk show, Chairman Tatsuo Hatta of the METI Electricity Trading Surveillance Committee stated, "The main players in this liberalization are the consumers. I hope you will use this opportunity to make good choices." The venue featured panels explaining electricity liberalization, booths from retail electricity providers proposing various plans, and a consultation corner accepting questions from consumers.
