On September 19, the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education and the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games simultaneously held the "Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Education Festival" at two locations: Ueno Park and Showa Kinen Park in Tokyo.
Positioned as the kickoff event for the Tokyo 2020 Education Program, affectionately known as "Ready, Set, Go!", the festival aimed to accelerate Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic education initiatives. Elementary, junior high, and high school students from across Tokyo participated in morning and afternoon sessions, with a total of 1,250 attendees.
At the special venue in Ueno Park, Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike appeared via video message at the outset. Referring to the closing of the Rio de Janeiro Olympic and Paralympic Games that same day, she commented, "Next, it's finally Tokyo's turn. It's important to accumulate valuable experiences over the next four years and to make those experiences irreplaceable assets for life." She called on the children to hold onto their dreams, respect the world's diverse people, and think about and act on what they can do themselves for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
At the stage event, Jun Mizutani, Rio Olympics men's team table tennis silver medalist and singles bronze medalist, Men's Team Silver Medalist in Table Tennis, Maharu Yoshimura, Women's 200m Breaststroke Gold Medalist at the Barcelona Olympics, Kyoko Iwasaki, and Men's Wheelchair Basketball Team Member at the Atlanta, Sydney, and Athens Paralympics, Katsumi Miyake, appeared and spoke about the joy of competing. Additionally, Mizutani and Yoshimura shared humorous behind-the-scenes stories from the Rio Opening Ceremony.
At the venue, participants also experienced the sports firsthand. Mizutani and Yoshimura took part in blind soccer, Miyake in wheelchair basketball, and Iwasaki in boccia. They interacted with children with smiles, promoting the joy of sports.
