The event "HAPPY DAY TOKYO 2017" (organized by the event committee) was held on March 20 at Hibiya Park in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo. This year, the "311 'Connecting Day' Project" also exhibited a booth. HAPPY DAY TOKYO is an event held since 2013 aiming to spread and establish the UN-designated "International Day of Happiness (March 20th)" in Japan. It features concerts, activities, exhibitions, and food and beverage booths.
The "311: Connecting Day" Project is an initiative aiming to help people remember the importance of "connecting" learned from the Great East Japan Earthquake and translate that into personal action. It began in 2014 with a statement by Mr. Haruo Miyagi, Representative Director of the NPO ETIC., which has been engaged in disaster area support. Inspired by Mr. Miyagi's call to "keep March 11th not just as 'the day the disaster struck,' but as a day relevant to everyone, preserving it in a positive way forever," like-minded individuals came together.
In 2015, the "Make 3/11 a Day of Connection" group was established. Companies and individuals supporting the group's purpose gradually increased, and various initiatives have been carried out annually.
With support from Benesse Holdings, the "Connecting Day Booth" returned this year. Activities included screening a concept video on monitors and inviting visitors to write "Connecting Messages."
Additionally, during the stage event, artist "AERIAL" performed "Ibuki" (Breath), a song supporting the disaster-affected Spa Resort Hawaiian (Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture), and the project's theme song "Let's Hold Hands." Approximately 200 attendees joined hands, forming a large circle around the fountain.
Akiko Nanbu, representative of the HAPPY DAY PROJECT, stated on stage, "The very theme of this year's event is 'Let's Hold Hands!' We want to share feelings of happiness by connecting."
