Key points from the IPC's announcement:
・Securing at least 1,756 spots for female athletes (a 17% increase compared to the London Games)
- Badminton, new to the Tokyo Games, will feature 14 events, while Taekwondo will have 6 events.
・Aligning with the IPC's concept of increasing participation for athletes with higher levels of impairment, boccia will have 116 athlete slots, an increase of 8 from Rio.
・While track and field and swimming will see fewer events, canoeing, shooting, table tennis, and wheelchair fencing will have more events.
These are some of the changes.
Regarding this decision, Yoshiro Mori, President of the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, expressed his welcome. He commented, "The largest-ever quota for female athletes and the increased participation opportunities for athletes with severe disabilities are crucial manifestations of the IPC's strategy to further advance the Paralympic Movement, using the Tokyo Games as a catalyst." He also stated, "I am grateful that our intention to avoid increased costs and additional venues was respected."
