On January 1, the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee signed official supporter contracts with the Sankei Shimbun and Hokkaido Shimbun.
The contract category is "Newspapers." While Tokyo 2020 sponsorship generally follows the "one company per industry" principle, this category was agreed upon with the IOC (International Olympic Committee) to allow multiple companies to coexist. Since contracts have already been signed with four newspapers, this category will now include six companies.
The main rights of Official Supporters include "use of names, marks, and related materials/opportunities to supply goods and services."
Iizuka Hirohiko, President of Sangyo Keizai Shimbun, commented: "Our company has contributed to the sports world by organizing events like the Osaka International Women's Marathon and the Spring High School Volleyball Tournament. We also run a project using proceeds from secondhand clothing sales to promote Paralympic sports. We will continue our commitment to sports promotion and fully support the success of the Tokyo Games."
Hiroshi Hirose, President of Hokkaido Shimbun, commented, "We wish to contribute from the 'northern land' toward the Games' success. Our company organizes or co-hosts approximately 250 sporting events annually, including the Hokkaido Marathon. With this agreement, we aim to contribute to realizing the Games' philosophy of fostering an inclusive society, creating legacies for the future, and focusing on the development of sports for persons with disabilities."
Organizing Committee Chairman Yoshiro Mori stated, "We look forward to forming a strong scrum with these powerful supporters and walking together toward the further expansion and development of the Olympic and Paralympic Movement."
