The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games began accepting entries for the "Tokyo 2020 Medal Design Competition" on December 20.
The competition is open not only to professional designers but also to students majoring in design and others with experience creating and presenting three-dimensional works. It seeks design proposals that leverage Japan's unique culture and appeal.

The Organizing Committee launched the "Everyone's Medal Project: Made from Urban Mines!" in April 2017. This initiative calls for public cooperation in collecting used small appliances like mobile phones and computers, using the extracted metals to create the medals.

Tokyo2020
This first-ever initiative in Olympic and Paralympic history has earned high praise from the International Olympic Committee, the International Paralympic Committee, athletes, and others both domestically and internationally as a meaningful project.
The Organizing Committee aims to create medals that embody the collective spirit behind the project and the significance of the medals themselves.
For the competition, entry documents will be accepted until January 19, 2018, for eligibility screening. Applicants who meet the requirements will be notified of their selection and receive details about the competition.
Submitted design proposals will then undergo a first-stage selection (flat design review: early April of the same year) and a second-stage selection (three-dimensional design review: June to late August of the same year).
A judging panel consisting of approximately 10 experts and knowledgeable individuals, led by Ryohei Miyata, Commissioner of the Agency for Cultural Affairs, will be established to conduct the selection.
The winning designer will receive a prize of 1 million yen and will be invited to the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony as a supplementary award.
