The marathon course starts and finishes at the new National Stadium, passing through Tokyo landmarks such as Asakusa's Kaminarimon Gate, Nihonbashi, Ginza, Zojoji Temple, and Tokyo Tower.
The race walking course will be in the Imperial Palace Outer Gardens, designed to allow spectator cheers to reach the athletes.
IAAF President Sebastian Coe commented, "The marathon course offers athletes a challenging experience while providing spectators with excellent viewing opportunities. It's an imaginative route that showcases the city's charm and will undoubtedly be a highlight of the athletics program. The race walking course, set against the majestic backdrop of the Imperial Palace, allows athletes to experience tranquility and beauty, allowing them to forget the hustle and bustle of the city. We are extremely satisfied with both courses."
Naoko Takahashi, Chair of the Organizing Committee's Athletes' Commission, said, "My heart races when I imagine the marathon route lined with countless fans. For both events, I expect the cheers from the crowds will inspire the athletes, and their response with peak performances will create races that will be remembered."
