Seiwa Business Link Second Life Preparation Support Organization Announces Strategy for "Post-Retirement Research Institute"

Seiwabiz Link, which handles human resource development training and produces information tools for major life insurance companies' customers, held a business strategy presentation on July 10 at the Tokyo International Forum in Chiyoda Ward regarding its "Post-Retirement Research Institute," established in February.

The company was formed in 2001 through the merger of Fuji Agency and Nissei Management. Leveraging its track record, partnerships with other companies, and network of specialized talent, the institute plans to conduct various activities targeting individuals in their 50s approaching retirement. These include publishing research findings, operating portal and community sites, and providing training opportunities.

At the outset, Hiroshi Manabe, President of Hoshiwa Business Link, explained that the institute was established as an organization to conduct research, studies, and provide support to help salaried workers, primarily in their 50s, prepare for a fulfilling life after retirement. He stated his intention to share an aspect of the business development. He continued, "Japan is entering a super-aged society where people live 100 years. We want to promote a new image of the next generation of seniors, where retirement is neither old age nor the end of life, but a time to discover and create new value for oneself, family, and society. The institute will propose and build the mechanisms and networks to achieve this."
Director Eiji Tokumaru (Director of Seiwa Business Link) presented on the background, purpose, and business plan for the institute's establishment.

Director Tokumaru categorized retirement under the Showa era as "Retirement 1.0," the Heisei era as "Retirement 2.0," and the post-new era as "Retirement 3.0," explaining that each has distinct retirement ages, definitions, images, and life scales. The institute, Japan's first organization dedicated to supporting employees aged 50 and above in preparing for their second life, advocates shifting from a "company-driven life" to a "self-driven life." It aims to address the "50s Syndrome," where motivation for work declines.
Operating as a development-oriented think tank, the institute manages the "Retirement 3.0" portal site, which provides extensive information on retirement preparation and post-retirement life. It also develops the smartphone diagnostic app "Comista" (nickname) in collaboration with advisor Takako Kojima (Associate Professor, Toyo University) and operates a member community site.

Shin Kusunoki, an advisor to the institute and professor at Kobe Shoin Women's University, explained the success of his book 'After Retirement' by noting that while only about 10% of people have concrete post-retirement plans, many in their 50s are interested in their own future after retirement. He emphasized that when social connections fade after retirement, it becomes crucial to "create another version of oneself." He expressed his desire to effectively combine his own accumulated expertise with the institute's organizational capabilities moving forward.
