From the day after the opening ceremony on July 24, 2020, until the closing ceremony on August 9, a record 33 sports and 339 events will be held across 42 competition venues.
On the 22nd, preceding the Opening Ceremony, softball begins in Fukushima, and soccer qualifying rounds also start. On the day of the Opening Ceremony, archery and rowing events commence.
On the first day of competition, shooting starts at 8:30 AM, followed by events in 21 sports including swimming (water polo), badminton, gymnastics, judo, table tennis, and tennis.
The men's road cycling race starts at 11:00 AM from Musashino Forest Park, heading toward the finish at Fuji Speedway. Images of the world's top racers speeding through the magnificent scenery around the base of Mount Fuji are likely to powerfully impress the world with the opening of the Tokyo Games.
Urban sports, a defining feature of the Tokyo Games, will see basketball (3x3) begin the day after the opening ceremony. Skateboarding, surfing, cycling (BMX), and sport climbing are scheduled throughout most of the Games, from the early to late stages, and are expected to generate significant interest among younger generations.
The first weekend of the Games, marking the midpoint, will feature medal decisions in many events. It will also host 23 competitions, including the newly added team judo (mixed), team triathlon relay (mixed), and trap shooting (mixed), likely drawing significant attention from spectators and TV viewers.
Track and field events will unfold over ten days starting July 31 at the new National Stadium (Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo), a symbol of the Games. The men's marathon, one of the event's highlights, will take place on the final day, with top athletes racing through the heart of Tokyo.
Domestic general ticket sales are scheduled to begin in spring 2019. Details for all 339 events will be finalized through coordination with relevant organizations.
Organizing Committee Chairman Yoshiro Mori stated, "With two years until the opening, we have reached a crucial milestone in preparations. We are confident this will be an unprecedentedly exciting Games, featuring the largest number of sports and events ever, condensed into a roughly two-week period. He added, "Beyond prioritizing athletes, the extensive coordination spanning over a year and a half involved domestic and international perspectives, including each sports federation's rules, gender balance, and scheduling popular events. We appreciate the cooperation of all involved and will continue refining the schedule."
