Approximately 2,800 athletes from 43 countries and regions will compete in 18 sports during the event, which runs until the 13th. As the last major multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities to be held in Asia before the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, it is drawing significant attention.
Japan is sending its largest-ever delegation of about 300 athletes competing in 17 sports. They aim to surpass the 143 medals won at the previous Incheon Games.
The opening ceremony took place at Jakarta's GBK Main Stadium, with Japan entering led by flag bearer Kaede Maekawa (track and field).
Japan's athletes have made a strong start, winning medals early in the competition, particularly in swimming.
