Tokyo Olympics Announces Competition Schedule

The Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee announced the competition schedule for the Tokyo Olympics (July 24 to August 9, 2020) on April 16.
The Tokyo Olympics will feature a record 33 sports and 339 events across 42 competition venues. (This announcement covers 326 events, excluding 13 boxing events).

The schedule was determined through discussions with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and International Federations (IFs), based on the principle of "Athletes First," while considering criteria such as compliance with each IF's rules and regulations, the perspective of global viewers, the balance of popular sports, and gender balance.

All events available for viewing in each session have now been confirmed ahead of the ticket lottery application period scheduled for May and beyond.

Before the Opening Ceremony
 ・July 22: Women's Softball, Soccer Preliminary Rounds Begin

Opening Ceremony Day (24th)
 ・Archery and rowing begin

Day after Opening Ceremony (25th)
 ・First medal event: Women's 10m Air Rifle
 ・Medal events also held in Archery, Cycling Road Race, Fencing, Judo, Taekwondo, and Weightlifting; medalists decided in 11 sports total

Mid-Tournament Weekend (August 1–2)
Popular events condensed
 ・On the 1st, medalists will be decided in 21 events. Also featuring: Judo Mixed Team, Triathlon Mixed Relay, Shooting Mixed Team Trap, Men's Soccer Quarterfinals
 ・On the 2nd, medalists will be decided in 26 events—the second-highest number during the Games—including the women's marathon, men's 100m final, four individual gymnastics events for men and women, the men's singles tennis final, the men's team foil fencing final, and finals in five swimming events.

Second Half of the Games
 ・Wrestling, karate, and team sports semifinals/finals will be held
 ・The highlight of the Games, track and field events, begin on July 31
 ・August 7: Men's and Women's 4x100m Relay Finals

Late Stage of the Games
・The day before the Closing Ceremony (August 8) will see medalists decided in 30 events, the most on any single day of the Games
   ・Finals in men's basketball, men's soccer, men's baseball, men's volleyball, artistic gymnastics, and swimming
・The final day featured the men's marathon, a highlight of the Games
・The final medal event was the men's water polo final
