Rugby World Cup kicks off! Twenty teams from around the world will compete in 48 thrilling matches.

Teams from 20 countries and regions worldwide, including Japan, will compete in 48 thrilling matches across 12 venues nationwide, culminating in the final on November 2.
The tournament vision is "Bond, Co-creation, and Forward." The catchphrase is "Not once every four years. Once in a lifetime. - ONCE IN A LIFETIME -."

Before the opening ceremony, the Japan Air Self-Defense Force's aerobatic team, the Blue Impulse, performed a flyover, adding a spectacular touch to the opening.

On the same day, at Tokyo Stadium in Chofu City, a spectacular opening ceremony utilizing projection mapping effectively unfolded for approximately 20 minutes, preceding the opening match between Japan and Russia.
The ceremony began solemnly with a dance representing the gods of the sea and mountains. Amidst the resounding beats of Japanese drums, it continued with a dance evoking a Japanese festival featuring over 200 participants and an introduction of the host city.

Additionally, Kabuki actors Ichikawa Udanji and his son Ukon performed the "Renjishi" lion dance, the motif for the tournament's official mascot "Rengyō," showcasing a magnificent "hair-shaking" display.
A screen shaped like Mount Fuji appeared at the center of the field. Surrounded by approximately 350 children holding the flags of the participating teams, they introduced the 20 teams. Alongside highlights from past tournaments, they sang the World Cup theme song "World in Union," energizing the crowd.

From within the screen, Richie McCaw, captain of New Zealand's back-to-back 2011 and 2015 tournament champions, made a surprise appearance holding aloft the Webb Ellis Cup, bringing the opening ceremony to its climax.

World Rugby Chairman Bill Beaumont stated, "The moment so many have waited for has finally arrived. Over the next six weeks, you will experience the best of the game and the best of Japan. Let us share unforgettable moments, both on and off the field."
His Imperial Highness Prince Akishino, Honorary President of the tournament, declared the opening: "I hope all participants will fully demonstrate their exceptional skills and greatly captivate rugby fans worldwide. I sincerely wish that this tournament will serve as an opportunity for the further development of rugby and that exchanges through sport will deepen friendship and camaraderie among the people of the world."
