The Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee announced on October 18 that the first lottery application period for Tokyo Paralympic Games tickets had received the highest number of applications in Paralympic history.
The number of applicants accepted between August 22 and September 9 reached approximately 390,000. This is more than three times the number for the 2012 London Games, which was considered a major success in terms of attendance.
Approximately 160,000 applicants will be selected, resulting in the sale of about 600,000 tickets. The Games will feature 540 events across 22 sports.

Andrew Parsons, President of the International Paralympic Committee, stated, "This ticket sale has seen unprecedented popularity compared to past Games. The first lottery for the London Games received about 116,000 applications, but the Japanese public has completely surpassed that. This figure is proof that preparations for the Tokyo Games are progressing smoothly and that this will be the most exciting Games ever. The key now is to maintain this level of popularity until all tickets are sold out."
Organizing Committee Secretary General Toshiro Muto commented, "We are deeply grateful for the tremendous expectations and high level of interest the Japanese public has shown for the Paralympics. We hope your cheers will inspire athletes from around the world and bring out their best performances at the Games."
The second ticket lottery application period is scheduled for early 2020, with retail sales planned for spring of the same year.
