"NIKKEI BLEND," a coffee priced in line with the Nikkei Stock Average, was selected among the world's top 40.

The Nikkei Inc. project "NIKKEI BLEND: Nikkei Stock Average-Linked Coffee" was selected as one of the world's top 40 campaigns at the global PR industry awards, the SABRE Awards, and received the 2019 Global SABRE Award. The award ceremony was held in Washington, D.C., on October 23.

The awards, hosted by the Holmes Group (headquartered in London and New York, CEO: Paul Holmes), a leading information provider for the PR industry, recognize outstanding PR projects.
The World Top 40 campaigns are selected through a secondary review of SABRE Award-winning campaigns from regions worldwide. This year saw approximately 5,500 entries from over 60 countries.

Award-winning entries

■ Stock Price-Linked Coffee "NIKKEI BLEND"
Aiming to make the Nikkei Stock Average, and indeed the Japanese economy, more tangible and relatable through taste, "NIKKEI BLEND" coffee—whose flavor changes in tandem with the Nikkei Stock Average—was offered for a limited time from March 25 to 29 on the first floor of COREDO Nihonbashi in Chuo Ward, Tokyo.

A special coffee machine was developed that not only retrieves Nikkei Stock Average data in real time and displays it at the counter but also blends five types of coffee beans with different flavors and roasts using a unique algorithm based on the Nikkei Stock Average. The machine automatically brews coffee that becomes stronger and more bitter as the Nikkei Stock Average rises above the previous day's closing price, and conversely, becomes more acidic and milder as it falls.
Paper cups used for serving coffee featured a portion of the front page of that day's Nikkei Morning Edition. Cups were covered with sleeves designed with the Nikkei average's actual value at that moment and the previous day's closing price as a logo. Launching the "Nikkei AR" app released last November and scanning the logo on the sleeve allowed users to watch a video of stock market commentary by Ryo Suzuki, Editorial Writer at The Nikkei.
Additionally, during the five-day event period, an advertisement for "NIKKEI BLEND" was published daily in the morning edition of The Nikkei. A system was also built where scanning the marker in the ad with Nikkei AR allows users to view archived videos of the previous day's commentary.
