Message from the Organizers
Approximately two and a half years have passed since the global spread of COVID-19 began. The shape of the post-pandemic world and society remains unclear. Russia's invasion of Ukraine is significantly altering the landscape of the international community, security, and economic spheres. Issues like food and energy security, along with climate change driven by global warming, demand immediate attention. Against this backdrop, the Asahi Global Conference brings together the world's "giants of knowledge" to discuss the future of our planet and seek solutions for a better society. For the first time in three years, some sessions will welcome general attendees to the venue.
The session "Global Intellectuals Interpret the Post-COVID Era" will feature four leading experts representing Europe and America as global "intellectual giants." Branko Milanović (economist), Emmanuel Todd (anthropologist and historian), Jacques Attali (economist and philosopher), and Markus Gabriel (Professor of Philosophy at the University of Bonn) will each be interviewed by an Asahi Shimbun reporter. Amid Ukraine's invasion signaling a turning point in the international order, what is needed to rebuild vibrant capitalism and safeguard democracy? In a two-part panel discussion moderated by Tomoko Nagano, the audience will watch video interviews while deepening the debate.
Additionally, Yuval Noah Harari, the Israeli historian known for global bestsellers like Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind and Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow, will take the stage. He will engage in a dialogue with Hiroshi Ishiguro, Professor of Robotics at Osaka University, on the theme "Technology and Society: How to Shape the Future."
Linda Gratton, author of "The 100-Year Life" and a leading researcher on longevity and work practices (Professor of Management at London Business School), will also take the stage. She will discuss "Navigating the 100-Year Life" in a dialogue with an Asahi Shimbun reporter.
