Kumamon, the famous PR mascot of Kumamoto Prefecture, is gaining popularity in Hong Kong. Japanese-style department store YATA recently signed a memorandum with the prefecture to enhance Kumamoto's recognition and promote local products using Kumamon. This was reported by NNA, which distributes economic information in Asia.
The first official overseas "Kumamon" shop opened on March 17th at three locations: Sha Tin, Tai Po, and Sen Wan (Sen = grass radical + kanji). Products will feature the "YATA×KUMAMOTO" logo to highlight their authenticity.
YATA has featured a Kumamoto agricultural products section in its stores since 2012 and previously ran Kumamon promotions at its Sen Wan store last year. Following this signing, YATA aims to further invigorate efforts to enhance Kumamoto's image and expand sales channels in Hong Kong.
