Host nation Brazil, aiming for victory on home soil, suffered a crushing defeat to Germany in the semifinals. The Japanese national team finished the group stage with two losses and one draw in their three preliminary matches, failing to advance.
During the tournament, the Dentsu Inc. headquarters building in Shiodome, Tokyo, displayed various messages using its building signage. During the group stage, messages primarily supported the Japanese national team. Afterwards, it displayed match announcements and updates like the quarterfinal and semifinal matchups.
On the final day, July 14, two messages were displayed: "A New Challenge Begins" and "Four Years Later in Russia," expressing hopes for the Japanese team's participation and success in the 2018 Russia World Cup.
