"Toto Grant Award Ceremony" Top athletes also in attendance

The Japan Sports Council (JSC) held the "toto Grant Award Ceremony" on July 16 at the Cerulean Tower Tokyu Hotel in Shibuya, Tokyo.
toto (Sports Promotion Lottery) has been sold since 2001 as a means to secure funding for implementing new sports promotion policies aimed at creating environments where everyone can enjoy sports and enhancing international competitive strength. JSC serves as the implementing body, responsible for distributing the proceeds as grants to sports promotion projects conducted by sports organizations and local governments.

Chairman Ichiro Kono explained that the 2014 fiscal year grants are expected to total approximately ¥17.7 billion and that sales for the "World Cup toto" lottery targeting the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil reached about ¥5.9 billion. He stated, "Through sports, we aim to build a Japan where children and young people can have dreams."

At the ceremony, grant certificates were awarded to representatives of local governments and sports organizations receiving funding, including the Japan Sports Association, the Japan Sports Association for the Disabled, and the Japan Football Association. Furthermore, it was decided that this fiscal year will provide hosting grants for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games and the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
Twelve top athletes representing those receiving athlete grants took the stage. Grant certificates were presented to gymnasts Kohei Uchimura and Kenzo Shirai, swimmer Takeshi Matsuda, track and field athlete Genki Dean, and table tennis players Kasumi Ishikawa and Ai Fukuhara. The athletes expressed their gratitude for the grants and stated their determination for the Olympic and Paralympic Games to be held in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and Tokyo in 2020.
