One year after Mount Fuji's World Heritage designation: Commemorative climb and offering of goods

The Mount Fuji World Heritage National Council (Fuji Council) commemorated the first anniversary of Mount Fuji's World Heritage designation on August 30 and 31 with a commemorative climb and the offering of Mount Fuji goods.

As the second climbing season since Mount Fuji became a World Cultural Heritage site draws to a close, a commemorative climb and the offering of Mount Fuji goods with donations were held as part of the "Fugaku Thirty-Six Project." This project raises funds through various cultural content related to Mount Fuji to support conservation activities.

The commemorative climb was the third installment of the "Fugaku Thirty-Six Challenge," which involves undertaking 36 Fuji-related challenges while raising donations through crowdfunding. Guided by Jun Yamada, CEO of Field & Mountain and former youngest person to summit the highest peaks of all seven continents, approximately 30 participants, including Daigo Sato, Representative Director of JustGiving Japan, and representatives from companies supporting the project, successfully reached the summit.

On the 31st, after descending, the same members dedicated 47 Fuji-related goods (see photo below) from various manufacturers who had participated in the Fugaku Thirty-Six Project over the past year, each accompanied by a donation, to the main shrine of Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha. Prayers and a ritual dance were performed, expressing the wish that the slogan used by the Fuji Summit Conference in its registration campaign, "Japan's treasure, the world's treasure," would be truly achieved, and that the valuable Mount Fuji would be passed on to future generations.

Representative Director Sato stated, "I climbed for the first time today myself, and I want many more people to experience the charm of Mount Fuji. I want to work to receive donations from as many people as possible for its preservation."

Additionally, Mr. Hidetoshi Kuranari, founder of the Fugaku Thirty-Six Project (Fujisan Conference Planning Committee Member / DENTSU SOKEN INC.), commented, "Since Mount Fuji became a World Heritage site, there have been many instances of 'using' Mount Fuji in designs, PR, and events. However, it seems only a few have offered any form of repayment for being allowed to utilize it. This isn't limited to Mount Fuji." Perhaps there is a tendency among Japanese people to think of the environment as free. We want to throw a stone into that pond and create a positive spiral that will be passed on to the future."
