On October 16, Minami Nippon Shimbun published a 16-page special advertising insert titled "Kagoshima 12 3D" as a separate edition. This coincided with the 66th Newspaper Convention (hosted by the Japan Newspaper Publishers & Editors Association) held in Kagoshima City and aimed to promote the appeal of Kagoshima Prefecture. Marking the 60th anniversary of the "Prefectural City and Town Relay Race" (hosted by Minami Nippon Shimbun), the feature divided Kagoshima Prefecture into 12 areas. It spotlighted two words starting with "D" that each area boasts: "Dynamic Nature" (majestic natural landscapes) and "Dramatic Life" (vibrant lifestyles). Adding "Digital" to form "3D," the feature utilized AR (Augmented Reality) technology to explore the latest possibilities in print media. Fifteen companies sponsored the feature.
The feature's front page and page 16 introduced the concept with appearances by the prefectural relay race mascot "Tasukingu-sama" and each area's local mascots. It called out: "Let's tour the 12 districts of the Prefectural Relay Race's Dynamic Nature and Dramatic Life through 3D, fused with digital technology!"
Starting on page 2, a system was implemented at approximately 30 locations: holding a smartphone running the dedicated app over photos marked with a "video" icon triggers related videos or audio to play. The "Dynamic Nature" section organized pages around four themes—animals, plants, space, and volcanoes—introducing subjects like the prefectural bird, the Japanese blue magpie, and Japan's largest giant tree, the Gamo Great Camphor Tree. Dramatic Life focuses on industries supporting people's livelihoods and indispensable traditions, featuring Japan's longest-standing textile "Oshima Tsumugi" and the annual event "Ogi Onsa."
