The Nishikawa Group, including bedding manufacturer Tokyo Nishikawa, celebrated its 450th anniversary in 2016.
To commemorate this, the "Nishikawa 450th Anniversary Grand Appreciation Festival" is being held from March 1st to 31st at approximately 1,800 locations nationwide, including department stores and specialty bedding retailers, featuring special products.
The company was founded in 1566 in Omi (present-day Shiga Prefecture). The futons it began selling around 1887 (Meiji 20) have become synonymous with the Nishikawa brand.
Features gold leaf from Kanazawa's "Hakuza," also used in the restoration of Important Cultural Properties
Kabuki actor Ichikawa Ennosuke has been appointed as the image character for the same appreciation festival, with TV commercials airing from the 4th. Furthermore, as a special campaign, a "Golden Futon" worth 4.5 million yen—a top-grade down comforter adorned with gold leaf—is being given away to one winner via lottery (until May 31).
The down is rare eider down, renowned for its superior moisture retention and elasticity.
The "Golden Futon" is a set of a down comforter and mattress pad entirely covered in high-quality Kanazawa gold leaf. The comforter uses rare Icelandic eiderdown, highly prized worldwide. The actual "Golden Futon" can be viewed at Nihonbashi Nishikawa in Chuo Ward, Tokyo, until March 13.
