The 2020 Organizing Committee and The Nippon Foundation signed an agreement on volunteer coordination and cooperation.

The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and The Nippon Foundationheld a signing ceremony for an agreement concerning the Tokyo 2020 Gamesat the Foundation's headquarters in Minato Ward, Tokyo, on June 15.

The agreement aims to foster momentum and lead to the success of the Games by leveraging the Foundation's expertise, know-how, and experience in volunteering to engage in various forms of collaboration and cooperation for the success of the Tokyo Games.
Both parties will collaborate on developing content for volunteer and leader training programs, training instructors, training volunteer selection interviewers, and implementing various events.

The Organizing Committee announced its basic approach to its "Volunteer Strategy" in December 2016. According to this strategy,it anticipates a total of over 90,000 volunteers, comprising both "Games Volunteers" (managed by the Organizing Committee) and "City Volunteers" (managed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government).The plan emphasizes collaboration with local governments and promoting participation from diverse groups, including people with disabilities and younger generations. Recruitment is scheduled to begin around summer 2018. Following interviews and selection,training is intended to commence in 2019.The Nippon Foundation, along with its group entities like the Sasakawa Sports Foundation, possesses extensive experience. This includes long-term support for volunteer organizations, direct disaster relief activities, sports volunteer development, hosting training sessions, and talent development for Paralympic sports federations.

Organizing Committee Chairman Yoshiro Moristated,"We want to create a historic Games like those of 1964. As the scale of the Games continues to grow, we hope many citizens will become key contributors. Volunteers shape the character of the Games. We expect the Foundation, a pioneer in volunteering, to provide high-quality training and other support to make these Games outstanding. We also hope a culture of volunteering will take root in Japan after the Games."
Sasakawa Yohei, Chairman of the Foundation
, stated,"We are extremely pleased to be able to contribute to the Games.Creating a society where 'everyone supports everyone' is central to our activities. Our goal is a society where people with and without disabilities live together. We want many people, especially the younger generation who will shape the future, to experience not just watching the Games, but the joy of working together and supporting them. We aim to make this a nationwide movement, not just in Tokyo."
