"TeamLab Planets TOKYO DMM.com" The wildly popular digital art space returns!

The super-large digital art space "teamLab Planets TOKYO DMM.com," created by the technologist collective teamLab, known for its concept of collective creation, will open on July 7th in front of Shin-Toyosu Station in Koto Ward, Tokyo. The event will run until autumn 2020.

This event is an evolution of "DMM.planets Art by teamLab," held in 2016. The previous event drew 210,000 visitors over 47 days, with wait times reaching six hours, and garnered attention from media worldwide.
The venue will feature seven massive digital art installations across a vast 10,000-square-meter space. These include "The Infinite Crystal Universe," where a light-filled cosmic space expands infinitely in all directions; "Floating in the Falling Universe of Flowers," installed within a giant dome space; and "Drawing on the Water Surface by Dancing Carp - Infinity," an infinitely expanding water surface artwork.

On June 27, a preview event for media was held. Takumi Nomoto, President of PLANETS, the company operating and managing the facility, stated: "Two years ago, we aimed to create an intensely positive event that would stir people's hearts. Partnering with teamLab, we attracted over 200,000 visitors. This time, driven by the desire for as many people as possible to experience it, we are holding the event again. We hope visitors will feel the works with their bodies, minds, and hearts."

TeamLab founder Toshiyuki Inoko stated, "The concept is to immerse your entire body in this vast space alongside others. Each piece is large-scale, allowing you to become fully engulfed within it. Through this extraordinary experience, you can reexamine your relationship with the world and remember that you are part of it. We hope it becomes an experience that broadens such perspectives." He also introduced part of the new exhibition: "We've evolved the previous event, creating works like one where you navigate through a space filled with floating spheres that move with changes in air pressure and currents. It's an image of immersing yourself in light within a space whose extent you can't fathom."

Following the screening of the concept video, actor Takeshi Kitano, who appeared in the previous event's commercial, took the stage. Having already experienced the installations inside the museum, Kitano remarked, "It delivers both visual stimulation through the imagery and sensory stimulation simultaneously. There are spaces that make you realize just how uncooperative the human body can be – it was incredibly fascinating. Think of it as a modern haunted house. I never imagined putting my feet in water could be so moving, and walking on soft mats brings back childhood memories. It's amazing how modern technology can create something this beautiful." He praised the high quality.
When asked what kind of work he would create if he were to produce digital art himself, he expressed enthusiasm for production: "I'd like to create a world of dinosaurs. Imagine flying from a bird's perspective and suddenly a dinosaur appears beside you. I want to create something that places you not just on the water's surface, but in space or the universe itself."
