The Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Organizing Committee announced that registrations for "Games Volunteers," which began accepting applications on September 26, exceeded 80,000 people as of November 20.
Volunteers will directly support Games operations at competition venues, the Athletes' Village, and other related facilities, providing services to spectators, assisting with competition operations, and supporting media. The Organizing Committee requires 80,000 volunteers.
The current gender ratio of those who completed registration is 40% male and 60% female. Applicants span a wide age range, from teens to those in their 80s and older. Japanese nationals account for 56% of applicants, while non-Japanese nationals make up 44%.
Regarding desired activity duration, 33% wish to volunteer for 10 days, while 65% want to volunteer for 11 days or more. However, 19% of all applicants are hoping for long-term activities of 30 days or more.
The application deadline is December 21 (January 18, 2019, for those with visual impairments), but the organizing committee continues to encourage applications.
Separately from Games volunteers, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is recruiting 30,000 "City Volunteers" to provide tourism and transportation guidance at airports, major stations in Tokyo, tourist spots, areas near competition venues, and live sites. (Application deadline: December 21)
