World Athletics Championships in Doha Conclude Japan Wins 3 Medals

The 17th IAAF World Championships in Athletics (hosted by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), official partners: TDK, QNB, ASICS, Seiko Holdings, TBS Television) held in Doha, the capital of Qatar, concluded on October 6.

The event, held every two years, is the world's premier track and field competition.
Over 2,000 top athletes from more than 200 countries and regions participated, competing fiercely in approximately 50 events over 10 days.
Japan dispatched a delegation of approximately 60 elite athletes, both men and women.
TBS Television broadcast over 90 hours of coverage across terrestrial and BS satellite channels.

Japanese athletes won gold medals in the men's 50km race walk (Yusuke Suzuki) and the men's 20km race walk (Toshikazu Yamanishi), with both athletes securing provisional qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Games.
In the men's 4x100m relay (1st leg: Shuhei Tada, 2nd leg: Koryo Shiraishi, 3rd leg: Yoshihide Kiryu, 4th leg: Hakim Sani Brown), Japan won the bronze medal with an Asian and Japanese record, raising expectations for the Tokyo Olympics.
Additionally, in the women's marathon, Kanetsuki Tanimoto finished in 7th place. In the women's 20km race walk, Kumiko Okada placed 6th and Nanako Fujii placed 7th, achieving a double podium finish. In the men's long jump, Yuki Hashioka achieved an 8th-place finish at the World Championships, the first time a Japanese athlete has placed in the top eight at this event.

The medal count by country saw the United States top the podium with 14 gold medals (29 total), followed by Kenya with 5 gold (11 total) and Jamaica with 3 gold (12 total). Japan finished 8th.
The next edition will be held in Eugene, Oregon, USA, in 2021.
