US-based ★ Coca-Cola to launch 3D printer for recycled bottles within the year

Ecocycle Cube

At Licensing Expo 2014, the world's largest international licensing trade show held in June, Coca-Cola's "EKOCYCLE Cube" 3D printer—which turns recycled PET bottles into filament (material)—garnered significant attention.
The printer is manufactured by 3D Systems, whose Chief Creative Officer is renowned musician Will.i.am. Coca-Cola launched the "EKOCYCLE" brand in partnership with 3D Systems in 2012, and the EKOCYCLE Cube was announced as its first product.

The EKOCYCLE Cube's filament is made from recycled Coca-Cola plastic bottles and is said to offer excellent elasticity and durability. Printing data for 25 items, including digital accessories and fashion items curated by Will.i.am, is ready to use. The cartridge comes in four colors: black, red, white, and natural. It can be operated via an app compatible with iOS and Android, with more item data to be added sequentially. The planned retail price is $1,199, with sales scheduled to begin within the year.

Will.i.am stated, "This marks the beginning of a sustainable lifestyle enabled by 3D printing. By partnering with globally influential brands, we aim to drive transformation through the power of technology, art, and style. Recycling is 'cool.' Once discarded, waste is just trash." 3D Systems is also collaborating with Hershey's Chocolate on a project using chocolate and other materials as filament.
