The Jomo Shimbun published the world's first "Silk Newspaper Special Edition" made from Gunma Prefecture silk on June 22, following the June 21 decision to register "Tomioka Silk Mill and Related Sites of Silk Industry Heritage" as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. This marks Japan's 18th World Heritage site overall, its 14th cultural heritage site following last year's "Mount Fuji," and its first modern industrial heritage site.
The special edition adopted the style of an extra edition announcing the registration decision, featuring a large layout of the title and a photo of the silk mill on the front page. The names of the 29 companies sponsoring the project were listed at the bottom. The paper itself used fabric made from 100% domestic silk to celebrate this remarkable achievement.

The silk newspaper was issued in a limited edition of 100 copies. It was displayed at shops and stations around the silk mill, at the newspaper's Tomioka branch office, and used for gift events at the Gunma Prefecture antenna shop "Gunma-chan House" in Ginza, Tokyo. It was featured extensively on TV talk shows and websites, generating significant buzz. The website 47CLUB Inc., which offers carefully selected regional specialties, is considering a limited sale of the silk newspaper.
The Jomo Shimbun will publish a 32-page color special edition supplement titled "Tomioka Silk Mill: Commemorating World Cultural Heritage Registration" on July 10. Centered on the theme of "Connecting," it will feature the silk mill's connections to the world and the Imperial Family, along with its potential for the future.
