NBC Universal announced in September that advertising sales for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics had reached a record $800 million, with final projections reaching $970 million, as reported by Ad Age.
Previously, the highest advertising revenue for Winter Olympics was approximately $750 million for the 2010 Vancouver Games and the 2002 Salt Lake City Games.
Major advertisers include Coca-Cola, Procter & Gamble, McDonald's, Visa, AT&T, General Motors, BMW, Citibank, Kellogg's, and GE. New entrants like BP are also participating.
In Russia, a law restricting activities advocating for LGBT rights was enacted, raising concerns about its impact on advertising. However, according to Seth Winter, Executive Vice President of Sales at NBC Sports Group, a subsidiary of the company, "The situation has not developed as feared."
The number of advertisers has decreased, leading to greater concentration as fewer companies increase their advertising investment. Winter emphasized the high advertising value, stating, "The Olympics are a unique platform that captures the attention of over 200 million Americans for more than two weeks. It's only natural that advertisers want to stand out from their competitors and ensure their message is heard."
