Tokyo 2020 Additional Events Announcement of 8 Organizations Under Review Bowling and Surfing Included
On June 22, the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games held a review meeting in Minato Ward, Tokyo, to consider additional events proposed by host cities. The committee selected the sports federations that will advance to the next selection stage. Attendees included Committee Chairman Yoshiro Mori, Honorary Chairman and Review Meeting Chair Fujio Mitarai, Secretary General Toshiro Muto (Deputy Chair), other committee members, and observers.

From the 26 organizations that applied by the June 8 deadline (Related article: http://dentsu-ho.com/articles/2661 ) The eight organizations selected this time are: World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC), World Bowling (WB), World Karate Federation (WKF), International Roller Sports Federation (FIRS), International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC), World Squash Federation (WSF), International Surfing Association (ISA), and International Wushu Federation (IWUF).

Chairperson Motai, who attended the press conference, stated that three points were emphasized in the selection process: contributing to the promotion of the Olympic Movement, enhancing public enthusiasm for the Games, and ensuring transparency and fairness. He added that they also took into account the 35 selection criteria for additional sports (popularity, organizational management, financial foundation, etc.) approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board in June based on the host city proposal. He further stated, "It wasn't a case of starting with a predetermined number of federations; rather, eight federations met the various conditions as a result."
Regarding the number of additional sports, Muto, the assistant chairperson, mentioned the IOC's policy of counting them separately from the regular sports (approximately 310), stating that the actual number of sports that can be added is not yet clear.

The Organizing Committee will now send questionnaires to the eight federations and conduct hearings in Tokyo on August 7-8. After formal approval at the September Executive Board meeting, the proposal will be submitted to the IOC by the end of that month. At that stage, specific event names, not just federation names, will be proposed. The final decision will be made at the IOC Executive Board meeting just before the 2016 Rio Games.
